Two people were taken to hospital after a crash on Edge Lane

Fire crews and ambulances are responding to a crash involving two vehicles near the busy road’s junction with Broad Green Road.

The incident is reportedly causing heavy congestion for drivers heading out of the city.

And motorists attempting to travel eastbound on the M62 could face further delays down the road due a separate crash.

Two crews from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service are working at the Edge Lane crash scene.

Two people – one from each of the vehicles involved – have been taken to hospital but the extent of their injuries is not yet known.

The vehicles involved were a silver Chrysler Crossfire and a grey Nissan Juke.

A spokesman for the fire service said the force was called to the crash by Merseyside Police at 5.56pm.

The collision followed a separate incident on the eastbound carriageway of the M62, near Widnes.

Highways England and the North West Motorway Police each tweeted warnings that the motorway was closed in both directions following the accident, which also led to a car fire.

The westbound carriageway has just reopened and emergency services are hoping to reopen one lane eastbound shortly.

An earlier crash on the southbound carriageway of the M6, near Newton-le-Willows is now thought to have cleared.
