Southport road shut after serious car crash

 

Emergency services are this evening at the scene of a car crash near Southport .

A main road between Southport and Liverpool has been shut after the collision.

Two cars were reportedly involved in the crash on Waterloo Road outside Southport Rugby Club.

An eye witness said people had to be cut out of the vehicles by Merseyside Fire and Rescue .

A spokesperson for Mersey Fire and Rescue said they had been called to the scene at around 7.45pm and were working with paramedics.

An eyewitness said: “About 30 metres either side of the junction at Arundel Road, near Our Lady of Lourdes Church, the road is closed to vehicles, but still open to pedestrians.

“There are two ambulances, two police cars and a third fire engine has just arrived.

“The roof has been cut off one of the cars and they’re still trying to get somebody out.”

People living nearby said they didn’t see anything but heard an ‘almighty bang’. Liverpool Echo
