Mobile Camera Sites

There are currently twenty two mobile sites located across Merseyside. Within the Liverpool local authority there are eleven, within the Wirral local authority there are three, within the Sefton local authority there are three, within the Knowsley local authority there are two and within the St Helens local authority there are three. These locations have been approved by the Department for Transport due to evidence of high speeds and a high number of traffic collisions resulting in casualties. They are enforced by Merseyside Police on behalf of the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership.
Explanation
It has now been possible to compare the number of collisions and casualties recorded at mobile camera sites both before (April 2006 to March 2007) and after (April 2007 to March 2008) their introduction. In addition speed surveys at these sites have been compared between December 2005 and 2008.
Liverpool
At mobile camera sites in the Liverpool local authority, there has been a 6% reduction in the total number of collisions recorded since their introduction.
The number of fatal casualties has increased by 100% from 0 to 1, whilst those seriously injured have decreased by 33% from 15 to 10. There have been no fatal child casualties, whilst those seriously injured have decreased by 50% from 2 to 1, and those slightly injured have increased by 15% from 20 to 23 across the same time period.
Overall 85th percentile speeds have decreased from 41.5mph to 38.8mph (6.4%) where the posted speed limit was 30mph.
Wirral
At mobile camera sites in the Wirral local authority, there has been a 4% reduction in the total number of collisions recorded since their introduction.
The number of fatal casualties has decreased by 100% from 1 to 0, whilst those seriously injured have decreased by 25% from 4 to 3. There have been no fatal child casualties, whilst those seriously injured have increased by 100% from 0 to 1, and those slightly injured have increased by 500% from 1 to 6 across the same time period.
Overall 85th percentile speeds have decreased from 36.6mph to 33.7mph (8.1%) where the posted speed limit was 30mph.
Sefton
At mobile camera sites in the Sefton local authority, there has been a 15% reduction in the total number of collisions recorded since their introduction.
There have been no fatal casualties, whilst those seriously injured have increased by 200% from 1 to 3. There have been no fatal child casualties, whilst those seriously injured have increased by 100% from 1 to 2, and those slightly injured have decreased by 40% from 5 to 3 across the same time period.
Overall 85th percentile speeds have decreased from 41.0mph to 38.8mph (5.4%) where the posted speed limit was 30mph.
Knowsley
At mobile camera sites in the Knowsley local authority, there has been a 33% reduction in the total number of collisions recorded since their introduction.
There have been no fatal casualties, whilst those seriously injured have increased by 50% from 2 to 3. There have been no fatal child casualties, whilst those seriously injured have remained constant, and those slightly injured have decreased by 50% from 6 to 3 across the same time period.
Overall 85th percentile speeds have decreased from 42.8mph to 41.3mph (3.5%) where the posted speed limit was 30mph.
St Helens
At mobile camera sites in the St Helens local authority, there has been a 70% rise in the total number of collisions recorded since their introduction.
There have been no fatal casualties, whilst those seriously injured have increased by 300% from 0 to 3. There have been no fatal child casualties, whilst those seriously injured have increased by 100% from 0 to 1, and those slightly injured have decreased by 25% from 4 to 3 across the same time period.
Overall 85th percentile speeds have increased from 38.1mph to 37.1mph (2.6%) where the posted speed limit was 30mph.
