Drivers were involved in a series of crashes on icy roads yesterday as Merseyside was hit by a fresh wave of snow.  A car was left lanced on the pole of a metal barrier after crashing in Everton.  The pole from the barrier pierced the windscreen around 1.30pm yesterday, narrowly missing the driver.  It happened on Hapton Street, off Everton Valley. The man who was driving is not believed to have been injured. Friends helped to free the car.  A blue Ford Fiesta also ended up in a ditch near West Kirkby in Wirral.  Liverpool Echo

A man had to be cut free from the wreckage of a car that overturned during icy conditions on the East Lancs last night.  The man, believed to be aged in his 30s, was trapped following a collision on the Lancs near the Haydock Island junction.  It happened at about 6.45pm in treacherous conditions caused by snow and sleet when the temperature was close to freezing.  The victim was taken to hospital by paramedics.
